Volunteer in one of our Bike It schools

We are always looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers to assist our work in Bedfordshire.

Sustrans schools projects encourage, motivate and inspire children and their families to cycle, scoot and walk more, through a programme of exciting events that run throughout the year.

If you would like to volunteer, the first step is to fill out an application form, which you can download here. Get it back to us and we can then meet up to discuss how you can help further.

Summary of tasks

You can assist with planning and carrying out activities at local schools. This might include:

  • bike, balance bike and scoot skills sessions and other playground activities (full or half day)

  • bike or scooter safety check days (Dr Bike/Dr Scooter) and bike mech training sessions (full or half day)

  • off-stabiliser sessions (one hour after school)

  • guided bike rides (1-2 hours)

  • bike breakfasts (early start – few hours)

  • occasional class activities, community events and competitions

Skills required

It would be great to find new volunteers who:

  • are passionate about active travel and the outdoors

  • enjoy working with children

  • are reliable and punctual

  • are flexible, enthusiastic

If you have an aptitude with bikes or scooters this is an advantage, but there will be training to improve your skills.

Rangers and Led Ride volunteers

Rangers help keep the miles and miles of National Cycle Network well signposted, cleared of vegetation and report any issues so everyone can access safe cycle routes. Contact maria.desborough@sustrans.org.uk to find out how you can get involved.

The Luton & Dunstable Cycling Forum run regular led rides from Luton or Dunstable. Upcoming led rides can be viewed here.
